Steven Abbadessa, DO | Founder, HPV Center of America

About Dr. Abbadessa

Dr. Steven Abbadessa, or as many of his patients call him Dr. Abby, is a board-certified proctologist and surgeon with more than 30 years of experience treating HPV patients.

Dr. Abbadessa was an early adopter of what’s become known as combined human papillomavirus therapy, or combined therapy. The therapy combines physically removing genital and anal warts with the use of traditional surgical techniques, medical lasers, prescription compounds or acids that dissolve the lesions. Simultaneously, the powerful antiviral drug interferon is used to attack HPV under the skin.  Approved by the FDA to treat HPV, interferon suppresses the virus so your immune system can fight the virus.

Dr. Abbadessa is a pioneer of the combined therapy method. He has helped improve the therapy since the anti-viral drug was first approved by the FDA in the mid-1980s.

He was also at the forefront of the HIV epidemic in the late 1980s. As a medical officer in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Abbadessa oversaw the treatment of upwards of 30 active duty HIV positive airmen in the HIV ward at Wilford Hall at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. A member of the hospital’s infectious disease department, Dr. Abbadessa specialized in treating patients with HIV, HPV and herpes simplex virus, or HSV.

Board Certification

Dr.  Abbadessa is a board-certified proctologist. Proctologists are medical doctors who are specifically trained in dealing with the colon, rectum and anus. Your health and wellbeing mean everything in living a happy and fulfilled life. That’s why it’s important to choose carefully when considering health-care providers, especially when it comes to genital and anal warts, hemorrhoids and other colon and rectal issues.

He is certified by the American Osteopathic Association, which means he's received additional training in the specialty of proctology and continues ongoing education to maintain his certification along with other requirements by the AOA.

Osteopathic physicians, or DOs, bring an extra dimension to healthcare, offering a holistic approach. DOs look at the whole person when diagnosing and treating disease and focus on preventative care.
